The War of 1812

Assignment

In groups students will create their own mini-movie about a historically significant event that took place during the War of 1812. Students will write a script and act in the movie, which will be recorded and presented to the class. Students will also research the event and write a brief essay, using 3 sources, explaining why and how the event is significant to America within a larger context. After presenting the movie, students will explain individually why that particular event is historically significant.

Steps for Assignment...

1. Each student will be assigned to a group of four (4). In your group think about what event in the War of 1812 was historically significant. Ask yourselves why is it significant? Remember that for it truly to have significance not only should it be an important event that occurred in the war, but should also have some larger impact on American history.

2. Research the event. Using your notes from class, the links below and any other information you collect, make sure you can answer who, what, where, when, why and how. This information will help you understand the role certain groups, individuals and towns played in the war. For example, think about whether the people involved played a major role or a minor role?

3. Write a brief argumentative essay explaining why the event is historically significant. Remember that each member must hand in their own essay (two-three pages in length). Remember that in the essay you are making an argument as to why the event has significance. A strong essay will not only state the significance within the war, but also argue a significant impact/influence on America as a whole. An impact could be cultural, social, or economic. Each student should use at least three scholarly sources (secondary sources) in their essay. Each student will present their argument(s) after the class watches their video.

4. Write your script for the mini-movie. Remember that you are recreating a particular event, so whatever you write you will have to act out. All members of the group should co-write the script together. Each group member should act in the movie and engage in adequate dialogue with their peers. The group will also hand in one copy of the script to the teacher. Each group will then present their movie to the class. Remember you are aiming for your movie to be between five to ten minutes in length.

5. Practice and prepare. Once your group has written the script, spend some time practicing together. This is your chance to be creative with language and accents. Decide on what props or costumes you need, which you can either make or borrow.

6. Now film your video. Remember that you will have use of a video camera through the technology department and technology students will help you in editing your video. The movie should be between 5-10 minutes long and should be consistent to the event.

7. Present your video to the class. After the class watches your movie, each student will explain why they thought that event was significant to the war.
